Tae Kwon Do By Definition

The Different Tae Kwon Do Divisions
Tae Kwon Do, in the traditional Korean sense - is the art of self-defense which offers a system of discipline in unifying the mind, the body and the spirit. Unlike the sport Tae Kwon Do - the traditional Tae Kwon Do is focused on the traditional self-defense techniques and values and is not competition oriented at all.

There are two styles from which Tae Kwon Do is divided into. These are the International Tae Kwon Do Federation (ITF) and World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF). The main difference between the two divisions is that in the ITF, punches to the head are allowed and amazing airborne kicks are given bigger points.

Another sub-category lies under the ITF, which is the Olympic Tae Kwon Do. The Olympic Tae Kwon Do uses obligatory headgear and body armor during matches, whereas in ITF tournaments only protective padding for the fists and feet are needed. In general, all sparring rules still are based from the original WTF headquarters at Kukkiwon in South Korea. However, despite the slight differences in the sparring rules - all divisions of Tae Kwon Do still is guided by the same principle of utilizing the longer reach of the legs and their relatively greater power than the arms.
